Artist’s Statement

My art is created in order to keep my insanity intact.  For a long while I turned my back on my art and tried to lead what is called euphemistically a ‘normal’ life.  I returned to my creative self in the early 2000’s and reunited with my muse.  My creative pursuits take me away from reality and all that implies and  let me experiment and explore without boundaries.

For me the creative process is challenging, frustrating and depressing, but when it comes together, it’s the most satisfying of any life process.  When my work is going well, I feel euphoric and at times orgasmic!

My work is often primitive, almost always colourful, fantastical, can also be complex and innovative.

I work with several tools, and my favoured changes with  mood and circumstance.  I include in my list of preferences: my cameras, my computer software, my one inch paint brush, my paints be they watercolour, oils, acrylics of gouache.  Each method I explore provides pathways to the realization of my vision of the moment.  Using computer software to explore colour is liberating and often provides instant gratification.

Often drawn to the botanical, I find inspiration in the organic and the antiquities, bold colour and simple lines.

I do not logically decide on what work I may explore.  These decisions are presented to me by my inner voice.  I do find that I need to do series of pieces as  series provide a group dynamic for me.

I have always been stimulated by colour.  In the beginning my colour palette was subdued, withdrawn and upon reflection, timid I think.  Mostly these original works were directed by financial constraints [the use of washes instead of dense colour for example] which although challenging my work, also limited it.  I now embrace bold colours and work in a much smaller format. Currently, my works include what I call my Colour Studies series: works with bold colour on paper: watercolour, gouache, acrylics and collage.

I only want one thing when people look at my work: a reaction, be it positive or negative.
